The Kibriani made a jiggling motion which — in the absence of any speech from her link, or additional communication of any other kind — he interpreted to mean ‘I have no idea’.

“That sensation,” he breathed.

A thought formed in his mind, a notion so unlikely and outlandish and radical it felt like it ought to be forbidden. It was the only explanation that made any sense. As insane as it sounded even while inside his own head, as much as the concept boggled his mind, as vast as the energy requirements must have been… the stars could only be so entirely wrong for one reason.

“We’ve been moved,” he said. “The whole planet. Someone opened a wormhole directly in Shuul’s path.”

“Impossible,” said the Kibriani. Her link repeated the word twice more.

“How else could the stars be wrong? The planet must have moved.”

“All planets move.”
